Stratford-upon-Avon's Hidden Gem

Katherine, Henry V future wife, played by Joanne Amaral

Posted on 31 March, 2017 at 6:20

Joanne Amaral who plays Princess Katherine in Tread the Boards upcoming performance of Henry V, joins the award-winning Stratford upon Avon fringe theatre company for the first time.

Princess Katherine is French and the daughter of King Charles VI and Queen Isabel. As war between kingdoms start, she becomes aware that she might have to marry the English king. With the help of her maid Alice, she begins to learn the English language. Being raised to act like a prim and proper princess, Katherine is astonished with how inappropriate English words sound.

In this play by William Shakespeare, he really plays on Katherine’s thick French accent and turns the act of learning English into an act of comedy gold. Though at first she is unsure if she wants to marry Henry, she knows she has no real saying in the matter as it is her father’s decision and not hers.

Joanne is a professional actress from Portugal that recently finished a MA Acting degree at Birmingham School of Acting. After her BA in Acting from Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetaculo in Oporto she moved to the UK to continue with her career. From devising and physical theatre to solo performance and community theatre, since in the UK Joanne has experienced many types of theatre and worked with people from all over the world. Her work has taken her to various places in the world from the remote Falmouth to Laguepuie, a small village in France. She is facing the challenge of acting in a second and fourth language but not to worry, it is all for your amusement. Joanne will be busy in Birmingham until the end of August with another exciting production.
